Description

These Witch’s Cauldron Cupcakes are a spooky and delicious treat featuring rich dark chocolate cupcakes topped with black buttercream and whimsical green chocolate bubbles shaped like cauldron bubbles. Made using a simple technique to create chocolate spheres with candy melts, they’re perfect for Halloween or any magical-themed party.

Ingredients

Chocolate Spheres

  • Green Wilton Chocolate Candy Melts – quantity as needed
  • Small half-circle silicone mold – 1

Additional Tools

  • Cake scraper – 1
  • Small saucepan – 1

Instructions

  1. Melt the Candy Melts: Place the green Wilton chocolate candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in the microwave for 30-40 seconds. Stir thoroughly until smooth and free of lumps.
  2. Fill the Molds: Using a teaspoon, scoop about one teaspoon of melted chocolate into each half-circle mold cavity, carefully spreading the chocolate up the sides to create a hollow shell. Repeat until all molds are filled.
  3. Flatten the Tops: Use a cake scraper to gently pull across the filled molds to smooth and level the chocolate, making the tops flat and even.
  4. Set the Chocolate: Let the molds sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes to harden, or place them in the freezer for 10 minutes for faster setting. Once set, carefully pop the half spheres out of the molds.
  5. Heat the Pan: Warm a small saucepan over medium heat until very warm but not smoking.
  6. Assemble the Spheres: Working two halves at a time, place one half-circle down on the warm pan and quickly press its flat side together with another half-circle, using your fingers to wipe away any excess melted chocolate drips. Hold until the two halves stick together and the sphere forms. Allow to dry and set.
  7. Stick Entire Circles Together: To add dimension, briefly place a fully formed sphere on the warm pan for less than a second to slightly melt its base, then press it onto another sphere to attach. Use these to decorate the cupcakes as bubbling cauldron bubbles.
  8. Decorate the Cupcakes: Place the finished chocolate spheres on top of black buttercream-frosted dark chocolate cupcakes to create the appearance of bubbling witch’s cauldrons.

Notes

  • Use a silicone half-circle mold for easy removal of chocolate spheres.
  • Be careful not to overheat the chocolate melts to avoid burning or clumping.
  • Work quickly when joining halves to ensure the chocolate is still warm and sticky for bonding.
  • Allow the spheres to set completely before handling to avoid breakage.
  • The black buttercream and cupcake base are not included; this recipe specifically focuses on the decorative chocolate spheres.
