Description

This Vegan Apple Crumble is a warm and comforting dessert featuring tender, cinnamon-spiced apples topped with a crispy, buttery vegan crumble. Perfectly baked to golden brown perfection, this recipe offers a delightful combination of sweet and tart flavors, making it a perfect treat for fall or any cozy occasion. Served warm, it pairs beautifully with vegan vanilla ice cream or salted caramel for an indulgent finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Apple Filling

  • 6-7 cups peeled, cored and diced apples (about 2 1/2 pounds whole apples)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup vegan butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and lightly spray a 9×13 inch casserole dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the Apple Filling: In a large bowl, combine the peeled, cored, and diced apples with brown sugar, lemon juice, all purpose flour, ground cinnamon, and salt. Mix thoroughly to evenly coat the apples with the mixture, which will help thicken the filling during baking.
  3. Transfer to Dish: Pour and spread the apple mixture evenly into the prepared casserole dish, setting it aside for the topping preparation.
  4. Make the Crumble Topping: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt. Add melted vegan butter and stir until a crumbly mixture forms. Use your fingers to combine the mixture fully, creating some larger chunks to achieve delicious clusters after baking.
  5. Top the Apples: Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples in the casserole dish, ensuring some larger crumbs are left to create texture.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until the crumble topping turns golden brown, apples are tender, and the sides are bubbling.
  7. Serve: Remove from the oven and serve warm, ideally with vegan vanilla ice cream and vegan salted caramel sauce for an extra special touch of flavor.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free version, substitute the all purpose flour with a gluten free all purpose flour blend.
  • Any apple variety works well, but granny smith and honey crisp apples are preferred for their balance of tartness and sweetness. Using a mix enhances flavor depth.
  • Miyoko’s vegan butter is recommended, but any melted vegan butter will work. Coconut oil can also be used as a substitute with good results.
