Description

A warm and fragrant slow cooker mulled cider recipe featuring fresh apple cider, orange, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves simmered together for a cozy autumn or winter beverage.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 gallon fresh apple cider or unfiltered apple juice
  • 1 medium orange
  • 1 (1 1/2-inch) piece fresh ginger
  • 5 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves

For Serving

  • Orange slices, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the slow cooker: Pour 1 gallon of fresh apple cider or unfiltered apple juice into a 5-quart or larger slow cooker, ensuring enough space for ingredients and simmering.
  2. Slice orange and ginger: Cut the medium orange into 1/4-inch-thick rounds. Slice the 1 1/2-inch piece of fresh ginger crosswise into 1/4-inch-thick pieces. Add both sliced orange and ginger to the slow cooker.
  3. Add spices: Add 5 cinnamon sticks and 1 tablespoon of whole cloves to the slow cooker. For easier serving, place cloves and spices inside a tea ball or wrap them in a double layer of cheesecloth or a paper coffee filter, tying it closed to form a sachet.
  4. Cook the cider: Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 4 hours, allowing the flavors to meld together and infuse the cider deeply.
  5. Strain if needed: If you notice clumps of spices floating at the top that you want removed, strain the cider through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a large pot before serving.
  6. Serve warm: Keep the mulled cider warm in the slow cooker or transfer to serving mugs. Garnish with additional orange slices if desired.

Notes

  • Using fresh apple cider and fresh ginger enhances the flavor and aroma of this mulled cider.
  • Simmering the ingredients slowly in a slow cooker creates a well-rounded and comforting beverage perfect for cold days.
  • Wrapping spices in a sachet or tea ball makes removal easier after cooking and keeps the drink smooth.
  • Adjust the spices or add extras like star anise or nutmeg to customize the flavor.
  • Serve mulled cider warm in mugs for a cozy presentation.
