Description

This decadent Chocolate Spider Trifle is a fun and festive dessert perfect for Halloween or any chocolate lover’s party. Layers of rich chocolate cake cubes, creamy chocolate pudding mixed with whipped topping, crushed Oreos, and a playful spider design made with Hershey’s syrup come together to create an eye-catching and indulgent treat that serves 16.

Ingredients

Scale

Chocolate Cake

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix plus ingredients listed on the box

Pudding Cream

  • 6.6 oz instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 3 cups milk
  • 8 oz (half) large container Cool Whip

Additional Layers & Garnish

  • 8 oz (half) large container Cool Whip
  • 1 package Oreos, crushed
  • Hershey’s Syrup, for topping
  • 1 plastic spider, for decoration

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cake: Make the chocolate cake according to the instructions on the box. Once baked, allow it to cool completely, then cut into cubes.
  2. Make Pudding Mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the instant chocolate pudding mix with the 3 cups of milk. Once thickened, fold in half the Cool Whip (8 oz) until smooth and creamy. Set aside the pudding cream mixture.
  3. Layer Ingredients: In a large trifle dish, start by adding half of the cake cubes evenly on the bottom. Sprinkle half of the crushed Oreos over the cake. Then spread half of the pudding cream mixture on top. Repeat the layering with the remaining cake cubes, Oreos, and pudding mixture.
  4. Add Whipped Topping: Spread the remaining Cool Whip (8 oz) evenly over the top layer to cover the trifle completely.
  5. Create Spider Web Design: Drizzle Hershey’s Syrup starting from the center of the trifle, swirling outward in concentric circles to the edges. Using a toothpick, drag lines from the center to the edges through the syrup to create a spider web effect.
  6. Decorate: Place the plastic spider carefully on top of the trifle to complete the spooky presentation. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • This trifle can be made a few hours ahead and refrigerated to allow flavors to meld.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute the chocolate cake mix and Oreos with gluten-free alternatives.
  • You can add chopped nuts or chocolate chips for extra texture if desired.
  • Make sure the cake is completely cooled before assembling to prevent pudding from melting.
