Description

The Black Widow Cocktail is a vibrant and refreshing mezcal-based drink featuring fresh blackberries, tangy lime, Concord grape juice, and a hint of sweetness from simple syrup. Topped with fizzy ginger beer and garnished with a bay leaf, this cocktail perfectly balances smoky, fruity, and spicy flavors for a smooth, seedless, and invigorating sipping experience.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruits

  • 4 fresh blackberries, plus more for serving
  • 3/4 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz Concord grape juice

Liquids

  • 2 oz mezcal
  • 3/4 oz simple syrup
  • Ginger beer, for topping off

Other

  • Ice
  • Bay leaf, for serving

Instructions

  1. Muddle Blackberries and Lime Juice: In a cocktail shaker, muddle the 4 fresh blackberries together with the 3/4 oz of fresh lime juice until the berries are broken down and the mixture is juicy, about 10 to 20 seconds.
  2. Add Remaining Ingredients and Shake: Add 2 oz of mezcal, 1 oz of Concord grape juice, and 3/4 oz of simple syrup to the shaker. Fill the shaker with ice, cover tightly, and shake vigorously for about 20 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes very frosty.
  3. Double-Strain the Cocktail: Place a fine-mesh strainer over an ice-filled glass and strain the cocktail through it to catch seeds and pulp, ensuring a smooth, seedless drink.
  4. Top with Ginger Beer and Garnish: Top off the cocktail with ginger beer to add effervescence. Garnish by placing a fresh bay leaf and additional blackberries into the glass for aroma and visual appeal.

Notes

  • Double-straining is essential to achieve a smooth and seedless cocktail texture.
  • Use fresh lime juice for the best tang and brightness.
  • Adjust the amount of simple syrup to your desired sweetness level.
  • If Concord grape juice is unavailable, substitute with another dark grape juice or a similar berry juice for flavor.
  • Serve immediately to enjoy the cocktail’s fresh and fizzy qualities.
