Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 12-14 cups French bread, cubed
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups 2% milk
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 2/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup strawberries, sliced
- 1/2 cup blueberries
- 1-2 tbsp powdered sugar, for dusting
- Maple syrup, to serve
Instructions
- Prepare the Casserole Dish: Grease a 9″ x 13″ casserole dish with vegetable oil or butter to prevent sticking.
- Assemble the Bread: Cut the French bread into cubes, filling the casserole dish about three-quarters full.
- Mix the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, 2% milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and brown sugar until well combined.
- Soak the Bread: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the cubed bread in the casserole dish, ensuring all bread soaks up the mixture.
- Add the Berries: Slice strawberries and evenly distribute the sliced strawberries and blueberries on top of the soaked bread.
- Refrigerate: Cover the casserole tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or up to overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the bread to absorb the custard fully.
- Preheat Oven: When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
- Bake the Casserole: Remove the plastic wrap and bake the casserole for 35 to 50 minutes. Check at the 35-minute mark by inserting a knife to ensure the custard is fully set and the top is golden brown. If needed, bake longer until fully cooked through.
- Finish and Serve: Once baked, sprinkle the casserole with powdered sugar and serve warm with as much maple syrup as desired. Enjoy!
Notes
- You can prepare this casserole the night before and refrigerate it to save time in the morning.
- Use day-old French bread for best texture; fresh bread might get too soggy.
- Adjust the amount of cinnamon and vanilla extract to your taste preference.
- Feel free to substitute or add other berries such as raspberries or blackberries.
- For a richer custard, you can use whole milk or half-and-half instead of 2% milk.
- If you want a crispier top, broil for 1-2 minutes at the end of baking, watching carefully to prevent burning.
