Ingredients

Units Scale

Chicken and Seasoning

  • 4 pounds Chicken drumsticks (about 12 pieces)
  • 2 tablespoons Garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons Onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons Chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons Smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon Ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Pepper

BBQ Sauce

  • 2 cups Sugar-free BBQ sauce or low sugar BBQ sauce

Instructions

  1. Season the Chicken: In a mixing bowl, add the chicken drumsticks along with garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, smoked paprika, ground ginger, salt, and pepper. Using clean hands, generously rub the seasoning all over the drumsticks to ensure even coating.
  2. Marinate: Refrigerate the seasoned drumsticks for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to penetrate into the meat deeply.
  3. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a roasting tin with aluminum foil for easy cleanup and place a wire rack inside if available. Arrange the chicken drumsticks on the wire rack with a little space between each piece for even cooking.
  4. Bake the Drumsticks: Place the roasting tin in the middle of the oven and bake the drumsticks for 40 to 50 minutes, flipping them halfway through to ensure even browning and cooking.
  5. Glaze with BBQ Sauce: After the initial baking time, remove the chicken from the oven and brush each drumstick generously with the sugar-free BBQ sauce. Return the chicken to the oven and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes.
  6. Flip and Repeat Glazing: Flip the drumsticks once more, brush again with BBQ sauce, and bake for another 10 to 15 minutes until the BBQ glaze is caramelized and the chicken is cooked through.
  7. Serve: Remove from oven and serve the baked BBQ chicken drumsticks immediately while hot. Enjoy this smoky, tender, and flavorful dish!

Notes

  • Serving size is 2 drumsticks per person.
  • All ovens vary; you may need to increase cooking time by 15-20 minutes or raise the temperature to 400°F for faster cooking or crispier skin.
  • Chicken breast or thighs can be substituted for drumsticks if preferred.
  • Use your favorite healthy BBQ sauce to customize flavor as desired.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat in the microwave before serving.
  • For longer storage, place cooled drumsticks in a ziplock bag and freeze for up to 3 months.
